Isaiah Henderson Welch

Isaiah Henderson Welch was born on the eastern shore of Maryland on 22 June 1845. He completed two years of college at Wilberforce University before enlisting with the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. He later transferred to Company C, 55th USCT. He was wounded and assigned to the Freeman's Bureau under General O.O. Howard. He returned to Wilberforce after the war and graduated Valedictorian in 1870. He was assigned to Emmannel AME Church, but also held an appointment as Clerk of Customs at Pensacola, FL, and preached at the Navy Yard chapel.
