James M. King was either 20 or 22 years old when he enlisted as a musician in the 48th New York VolunteerInfantry on 20 July 1861 in Brooklyn, New York. However, his residence was not listed. On 21 August 1861, he mustered into 'A' Company. He re-enlisted on 22 December 1863. He mustered out of the regiment on 1 September 1865, at Raleigh, North Carolina.
